Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
