Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
