"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're not alone. A host of celebrated fans have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global audience.

But Haim will forever be their top commitment.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
